the term ambient or, if you are upper class, ah-mbeeahnt, means different things to different folks. to some: it means no discernible beats; others, no discernible human voices. to erik satie, the inventor of the concept of "ambient" music, it simply meant music in the background. personally, i agree with satie. the core of the idea is restraint. this is what i'm interested in more than any sort of technicality. it could be of any era, from any continent and made with anything, doesn't matter. as long as it is restrained in some way.

in honor of nathan corbin, aka nathan fortification, i have created a special avant-god mix.

avant-god was nathan's night at pianos before pianos was overrun with dockers clad weekend warriors. it was an expert mix of dark 80s elements with proper techno. there is a direct line connecting the 2 genres and nathan was the first person i've heard successfully mix the 2 in a cohesive, sincere and, most importantly, non-ironic way in a very long time.

i had the honor of playing with nathan a few times. i would love to see avant-god rise from the ashes of yester-year and save us all from the onslaught of banal hipsterdom.

it's clobberin' time.
