dr. ron paul

random new york city

i went to a party recently and got into a discussion with a friend on politics and the coming elections. he is someone who i enjoy conversing with on these matters. he works for abc news or some other news channel and is quite informed on current affairs.

at one point in the conversation, the topic became ron paul. now, i haven't followed any of the candidates and don't really care about any of them. romney and giuliani are the only candidates that i have any feelings towards and i hate both of them. romney because he is a mormon and giulaini because he is a prick.

i had heard a bit about ron paul, like about the world of warcraft congregation and about how he is what some people consider a "true" conservative, whatever that means. i generally tend to roll my eyes at people who call themselves conservatives, not that there is anything wrong with being a conservative, it's just that there is so much baggage associated with the stereotype. don't worry, i am an equal opportunity eye roller - i roll my eyes at liberals too.

my friend is apparently a big fan of ron paul, which surprised me. according to him, ron paul is the only candidate that is seriously opposed to the war - that is candidate still in the running at this time. this is fine. i have no problem with this and i am glad that someone is so opposed to something so retarded. he scored a point with me. according to another friend, obama admitted inhaling weed and doing drugs - obama gets a point too.

so, when i got home i checked out dr. paul's website, i found out what "true" conservatives are all about.

apparently, "true" conservatives don't believe in a woman's freedom to choose what's best for herself in terms of her pregnancy. typical male bullshit. i know what's best for a woman. i believe in freedom, except when it comes to someone's own body. i have never understood when a man thinks he has the right to decide what's best of a woman. and then he has the gall to be against the war on drugs. what an amazing contradiction. freedom, not freedom. minus one point. he's at zero.

dr. paul believes that taxes are what is killing america, not the carrot of credit that is dangled in front of every american by the un-regulatable corporations that fatten the purses of leaders who continually gush on about less taxes. look at the mess we are in because of lowered taxes. guess what, shit still needs to get done and getting shit done costs money. cutting taxes only increases the need to borrow, thus putting more strain on future taxpayers, who have to pay back what was borrowed - with interest! what's more, the interest will be paid to countries like china and lots of gulf states, and probably even russia soon enough. that's pretty sound economic policy, if you ask me. -1 point.

on privacy and stuff, he says, "The biggest threat to your privacy is the government. We must drastically limit the ability of government to collect and store data regarding citizens’ personal matters." any individual who is informed as to the goings on in the 21st century knows that the biggest threat to our privacy is not the government, it is the very marketplace that is the greatest threat to our freedom. it is my internet company that i use to get my information from. it is my bank, that keeps track of all my transactions. it is the arrival of rfid and the inevitable tracking of every single manufactured item. the marketplace that you so adore is the biggest threat to our freedoms. next.

i tried to make some sense of his health care idea. no idea what the fuck he's talking about. claims congress is to blame for hmos and offers nothing to substantiate this claim. it is entirely possible that congress did this, i am not denying this, but which congress? when? under bush? under clinton? then he makes a few stabs at a solution for the current health mess. 5, to be exact. well, maybe. dunno. like everything else that comes out of a politicians mouth, some of his little theory is plausible, but it seems like he is simply latching onto contemporary sentiment here and not offering any real solution. savings account, collective negotiations by doctors. this seems really half-assed to me. no longer counting.

he assumes that deleting the federal reserve will halt inflation. i don't care about the fed, one way or the other, but he, like all republitarians needs to think things through. inflation has happened because there is so much more money in our economy, than when the fed was created in 1913. the more money in circulation, the higher the value of the currency drops. this is part of the way inflation works. currency is like any other commodity, the less of it, the more it's worth. when governments start flooding their countries with new currency, the value of the currency goes down. the fed was created to avert the massive bank failures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and to an extent has done so. dr. paul, you are starting to sound idiotic.

national defense: want guns on planes. jesus, mr. paul, you really are just plane stupid(pun intended). then goes on about protecting our borders. oh boy, i think i hear immigration reform coming around the bend.

immigration: the usual conservative bullshit and then a bombshell. he wants to "End birthright citizenship. As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be citizens, the incentive to enter the U.S. illegally will remain strong." does this mean that we can finally get all these white people off of our land, dr. paul - starting with yourself? please say yes and if so, you've got my vote!

enough of his site. he sucks, let's look somewhere else about the dr.

what's this, oh he's a big-time racist, who knew? according to the new republic, he wrote a newsletter after the la riots in the early 90s, where he states that "Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to pick up their welfare checks three days after rioting began". and then starts bitching about black folks' "civil rights, quotas, mandated hiring preferences, set-asides for government contracts, gerrymandered voting districts, black bureaucracies, black mayors, black curricula in schools, black tv shows, black tv anchors, hate crime laws, and public humiliation for anyone who dares question the black agenda." and goes on to say that "America's number one need is an unlimited white checking account for underclass blacks."

i wonder how he feels about obama? someone should ask him.
