reality tv

the other day i got to thinking about the wire. i watched the first 3 seasons and found it mildly entertaining. everyone told me about how i was gonna love the 3rd season, but felt cheated. i've believed in the legalization of drugs for at least 15 years and have had experience with immediate family members who were addicts, so the ideas portrayed in the 3rd season weren't necessarily earth-shattering for me. besides this, there was something about the show that i didn't like and i just couldn't put my finger on it.

i figured out what the problem is. it's too real. and by real, i don't mean that the drugs and racial issues and corruption and all that nonsense are things that i just can't stomach. zzzzzzzzzzz. what i mean is that i don't like television shows that try to pass themselves off as reality. television is las vegas.

when i think of television, i think of magnum pi, chips, the price is right, santa barbara, press your luck, in living color, pee wee's playhouse, star trek, alan partridge, monty python. i want total bullshit for television, cuz that's what it is. you can't get a degree in anything from watching the history channel, so why bother? watch some tales from the crypt instead. even "reality tv" is total nonsense. i've seen an episode or two of "so you think you can dance" or something and found it not necessarily entertaining, but amusing.

the same goes for movies. i see these ads for these movies about family shit or somebody dying and all the shit that goes with it and i just want to barf. give me some bunuel, tati, fassbinder or lynch.

i feel that people who gravitate towards these sorts of pseudo-reproductions of "reality" have had no actual experience with the sort of events that compose these facsimiles and if they did, why the fuck do they continue to relive them?

television and reality, i'll pass.
