a friend invited me to see the queens/rusty santos/panda bear show at the bowery ballroom yesterday, last minute.
a few members of the finest dressed band in new york city - excepter where there in full effect as were some black diceans. though jeff ryan and dan hoagland were dressed down from their usual maximum leisure aesthetic.
i caught all 3 acts. they were all very good in my opinion. there was one track by rusty santos that was really incredible. don't know what it was. when scott mou and i worked at etherea, we confided in our mutual love of all things shoegazer and it is evident in his music. i am always impressed with people who's musical tastes span many genres and the fact that he has all the early releases on kompakt and makes music that is so completely unlike that shows how dynamic he is. good set scotty!
i was blown away with panda bear's set. really very, very nice. including, what sounded like the masters at work remix of that bitchin track off of bros. i remember in 1992 or whatever, when the orb's 'uforb' came out. to me it marked the nail in the coffin for the 80s - the end of all that hanging on to an aesthetic that had been explored over and over again. something truly new was being done with music. i view panda bear's music as the same thing. it is the first music that i can say is of the 21st century.
one thing i noticed was that all 3 artists were, well, sort of "mixing" their tracks together. there were no pauses between songs. it was almost as if they were djing, but some of the beats were off. it wasn't a trainwreck, but sometimes things got out of sync. what's interesting is that these kids are moving towards a more dj-esque sensibility, minus the current dj as sellout lifestyle accessory nonsense. it will be interesting to see where this ends up. me and my friend evan's theory is that they are all moving towards basic channel, which in the end means black sabbath, or even further something like bukka white and further still... going forward and backward simultaneously.
the images of rusty aren't very good. my camera was behaving strangely, or maybe it's the fact that i can't take pictures. the images of queens are quite fitting for his music. i only got a few snaps of scotty and rusty, my batteries died literally right as i was taking my first picture of panda. so it goes.
