what would jesus drive?

amtrak - southwest chief

god and suvs have one thing in common. people can't seem to get enough of them.

i live in brooklyn, in a poor neighborhood, relatively speaking. my apartment building is on a stretch of the grid that basically is sandwiched between two major projects.

the number of shiny, pimped out suvs crawling along bushwick ave. is absolutely incredible.

every time i go out into the burbs, again i see plenty of shiny new h2s and h3s.

my girlfriend saw a show on tv recently where people at filling stations were asked how much it cost them to fill up the tank. some guy in a hummer said it cost him over $100 per tank. and the thing gets something like 10mpg. so he's basically spending about 30 cents a mile with gas being $3 a gallon. then add traffic tickets, insurance and maintenance.

wow.

across the street from my apartment is the largest suv i've ever seen. seriously, you could fit a family of like 15 people in the thing. it's a ford and i don't know the model. i haven't seen it move in a few days, maybe someone can't afford to drive the damned thing.

i feel sorry for these kids who got a job or maybe a record deal and enough of an advance to put a down payment on an escalade, navigator, hummer or some other crap like that. they are going to be in debt for the rest of their lives.

the thing that is really bizarre to me is that this southern california mentality of "it's not where you live, it's what you drive" has invaded new york. i don't understand it. why would you buy a super expensive vehicle when you can only go maybe 4 blocks before you have to stop for a stoplight and sit for a few minutes, thinking about how much you owe.

i read recently that even with gas prices being what they are and there being a serious possibility that they will go even higher, people are still buying these gas guzzlers at a steady rate. i see brand new ones being driven every day.

people seem to have resigned themselves to living their entire lives in what is essentially indentured servitude. as the last of the generation who lived through the depression die out - who knew the value of money, that reference is lost. the reference of the value of money and the idea of not living life on credit. don't get me started.

then there's god.

i have never been a communist and have always thought that it was flawed from the start, but i give it cred for one thing - the attempt to de-god humans. it's a shame that after the fall of the soviet union, even after being a godless state for decades and generations, people immediately went back to their faith in "god". it seems like the worship of an arrogant, vicious, bloodthirsty, uncaring, racist, sexist, homophobic, omniscient, invisible asshole is instinctual. no amount of reason can stop the default - the desire to have ghosts make their decisions for them.

read it, i did.

hello christians, what is it going to take to convince y'all that your religion is based on a scrapbook written by a bunch of dudes? dudes being sinners? it's not the word of god, it's the word of man, or better yet, the word of dudes.

with all the advances in genetics, astronomy and astrophysics and countless other sciences, sciences that create the technology that christians unflinchingly use every day, people still dogmatically believe that jesus is the lord of this world and will, when you least expect it, magically take a ride on down to our lowly earth using the heavenly escalator to make a guest appearance on american idol.

so, in the end, we've got our god fearing and global warming doubting christians praying for their apocalypse whilst driving guzzling and polluting suvs, inducing global warming and therefore the apocalypse.

our species seems to be getting less intelligent, not more. maybe the christians are right after all. maybe there is no evolution.
