irradiated nation

on thinking further about the salmonella plague, i had an epiphany. isn't the food slung by major, multi-state chain restaurants irradiated?

according to what seems to be a partisan report set up by the idaho state university, "Food is irradiated to provide the same benefits as when it is processed by heat, refrigeration, freezing or treated with chemicals to destroy insects, fungi or bacterial that cause food to spoil or cause human disease and to make it possible to keep food longer and in better condition in warehouses and homes."

and furthermore, "Because irradiation destroys disease-causing bacteria and reduces the incidence of food borne illness, hospitals sometimes use irradiation to sterilize food for immuno-compromised patients."

sounds real good.

another study says that people are welcoming irradiated food, in the interest of safety, in increasing numbers.

salmonella is a bad, evil bacteria, and if irradiation worked as promised, the degree of this incident should have been negligible. but guess what, it appears that irradiation doesn't kill bacteria, it just seems to allow food to have a longer half, er i mean shelf-life.

the ironic thing is, people are increasingly welcoming irradiation because of the general fear and an epidemic that could potentially have been stopped if irradiation worked in the first place.

would you like some u235 with that?
