dear china

dear china,
congrats on all these new and fantastic structures that are going up in your #1 city. though most of them are associated with the olympics, at least one more 21st century marvel - the bizarre koolhaas concoction known as the cctv, or central china television building is being built independent of the games.
the renderings of these buildings are truly wondrous. certainly this is your announcement to the world that you have arrived... and welcome.
i have a question, though. what is the use of having such wonderful buildings that no-one can see? every picture i've seen of all these stadia and such looks like it was taken through a dark filter, eliminating all color and leaving only a slight silhouette of these displays of national pride.
sure, you've made great efforts to eliminate every source of pollution and for a brief instance so the world can ogle your masterworks, but what happens when the games are over? are these buildings cursed to live their lives behind a curtain of industrial excreta? are these buildings' splendor doomed to exist only in photographs?
who cares how beautiful you are is when no-one can see you?
