so george bush has made some grand statement regarding global warming today. that and his appointment of zoelick to the world bank have shared the headlines all day.
this move is purely strategic and has absolutely nothing behind it. more karl rove goodness maybe?
recently, there has been a lot of chatter from the european news organizations about how the european end of the g8 was going to make global warming a major issue at their upcoming summit in malta. it sounded like they were not going to allow bush to ignore this issue any longer and have to acknowledge it. so, by his making this call for a "summit", he is obviously trying to head them off at the pass.
my question is, will the europeans fall for it?
in his statement, he has insisted that the 15 major industrialized powers of the world get together and come up with a solution to global warming at the end of 2008. so, according to this proposal, until the end of 2008 a.k.a. the end of his presidency, the world has to wait to even sit down and talk. furthermore, if this meeting or series of meetings do take place, there isn't a single guarantee that he has to agree to anything at all. nothing. he could say nutz to the rest of the world, as he's been doing since day one of his entrance into the white house and there's not a damn thing anyone can do about it. there is nothing more than a "commitment" to meet up with other nations, and if you look at his abysmal track record for keeping his word or even just plain telling the truth about anything, there is no guarantee that this would ever happen.
this is nothing more than buying time and attempting to pass any sort of work onto the next president. he can put off all discussion and/or blame until the end and at that point i'm sure he could really give a shit anyway, not that he ever did.
