bitch and moan

it's funny, all this talk about how people are ditching their cars and riding public transportation for the first time in their lives. ridership is experiencing double digit increases pretty much everywhere in the country.
these same people who are making public transportation work for them, year after year complained about how public transportation didn't work for them. the bulk of the complaints were regarding the amount of time it takes to get from point a to b. things like:
"it takes me twice as long to get to work."
"it takes an unacceptable amount of time to get where i'm going."
"it doesn't go anywhere."
"it doesn't go where i want."
"it's dangerous."
"i'll get raped/mugged/hassled."
"smelly homeless people ride the it."
"public transportation is some kind of commie plot against the free-market."
i actually have seen all these complaints in comments on posts regarding it.
the same complainers would go on, at length about the need to cut public transportation subsidies. to only build and upgrade transportation infrastructure relating to private transportation. and now they're using it. after all the excuses and complaints, it suddenly is an option.
it wasn't an option when they were told that their cars were ruining our mutual environment. it wasn't an option when they would sit around, wasting their lives in the traffic jam without end. it wasn't an option when their fellow's taxpayers' property had to be seized, using eminent domain to make more room on the freeway.
what is the cause of this sudden shift in attitude? the cost of gas.
it shows you where americans' priorities are. not the environment, or the future health of their offspring, their immediate quality of life, or anything of any importance, but their wallets.
this is why this nation is in decline. not that i care anyway.
